Adventure out on a boat ride to Catalina Island. One hour north of San Diego is Dana Point, where you can take a 1 hour ferry ride across to the island and take a mini weekend vacation.

Walk among rare giant trees in the Sequoia National Park with some of the oldest trees at 3,200 yrs old. Visit Yosemite National Park and try to catch a glimpse of the famous Firefall. Both parks are located 6-7 hours Northeast of San Diego. Both offer incredible views and untamed wilderness.
The gorgeous trees in Big Sur, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, The Warf, Alcatraz, and The Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco is only an 8 hour drive North from San Diego. You can drive there on a Friday and be back by Monday. Though you may want more time because there is so much to see.
